I played this golf course in April 2000 and it is by far the nicest golf course I have ever played on.

My friend Kevin Dent and I played Muirfield on a blustery day in Nov 99.We made the short drive from North Berwick which was our base for golfing in this area and parked in the cavernous covered garage of the Honourable Company and walked the few steps to the entrance gate where the starter welcomed us. We were asked if we would have lunch at the club and then returned to our car for our jackets and ties and shoes (no sneakers) which we then left in the locker room. We were signed up to play two rounds of golf.
From the beginning we ran into some serious golfing difficulties. The stiff wind seemed mostly to be blowing against us and knee-deep rough consisting of a dense mattress, of slanting, wind-blown grass flanks the narrow fairways, in which a golf ball would disappear mostly never to be found again. Even a rabbit could be hiding under the grass a few steps away and you may not know it. Due to the uniformity of the rough it was very difficult to mark the spot where the errant shot flew in and this complicated the search some more.
When we did manage to stay on the fairways our eyes were opened to the beauty of the place and we never doubted the fact that we found ourselves on a thoroughbred and one of the most challenging golf courses in the world. With our handicaps in the mid-teens we were at the controls of a jumbo jet with our Cessna licenses. We crash-landed at the famous red-roofed clubhouse for a buffet lunch, which could probably rate a few Michelin stars and then took off for another wobbly but enjoyable round.
Some of the most beautiful holes are the par 4 2nd and 3rd and the green at the par 5 17th which sits in a little basin surrounded by small hills. Devilishly difficult are the par 5 5th and the par 4 6th to mention just two out of many.
All in all Muirfield was an excellent golfing adventure, non-pareil and almost non-par-able. A must-do at least once before the golfer heads for the turf.
