By all means include this course in your Scotland itinerary. Play the first 9 holes with the hickory clubs and the second 9 with your modern sticks. Enjoy the history of this course. Six Opens played here! A great warm up before heading to Gullane or Muirfield.

I have just visited Scotland for a few days and was impressed by the hospitality I experienced at the Musselburgh Old course.
Its a curious course within the horse racing area. Certainly worth to pay a visit!!

I first played this course in 1974 aged 12. It was an unkempt course in poor condition. There was no official starter but an old guy who collected 25p for your round. I used the course, as many did, to learn the game, as it was very cheap.
I have recently played a number of rounds on 'The Links' course with a friend. It is now maintained by a team of fully qualified and skilled greenkeepers. The greens are even, clean and like bowling greens. The fairways are lush and green. Sand bunkers are plentiful and are being constantly improved: better quality sand being gradually introduced. Some of the tee areas need improved.
It is a pleasure to play on a course which is eventually being treated the way it should always have been. They can be proud of their achievement in providing an excellent course. It is no championship course but considering its age and history, it deserves the new image it has gained. The course is relatively easy but can be a challenge depending on what the elements throw at you as it is exposed to the coastal weather.
Excellent value for money and you can smell the history.

It's been 16 years since I've played Musselburgh and I still remember every hole.
I would recommend it to anyone and everyone. I hope the next time I play it I get the chance to use old hickory shafted clubs. Don't miss it.

The nine hole Musselburgh Old Course is supposed to be one of the oldest golf courses in existence. This course is set a few hundred metres from the sea mainly in the middle of a horse race course and is interesting from a historical perspective as it held several Open Championship in the 1860s-70s and Mary Queen of Scots is reputed to have played here in the mid 16th century. This was also the home of the Parks, Willie, Mungo and Willie Jr.
The course was relatively easy, and in OK, but not great condition although the greens were not the worst I played in Scotland. The strongest hole is the fourth hole (Mrs. Formans) which has its green right by a pub of the same name and is an excellent dogleg-right par 4. Great fun to play with a very friendly starter and a great value for nine holes.
