Situated by a working RAF Bomb Disposal training range, this otherwise boring course offers a new meaning to the term 'hazard'.
Course etiquette demands that you stroll across the MOD owned access roads as if, indeed, YOU own the place. Ignore protests of approaching Spartan tanks driven by wary airmen. In fact, aiming golf shots at passing tracked vehicles is 'de-rigeur' and a direct hit will surely warrant a round of drinks in the run-down clubhouse after a soul destroying 9-holes.
Grin smugly to yourself as you weave your Volvo drunkenly through the MOD married quarters, skittling playing children out of your way... safe in the knowledge that RAF and Army personnel will get the blame for any anti-social behaviour on your part.
North Luffenham... A golf course for the discerning gent who cannot afford a real golf club membership, yet is not too far a drink-drive from your Rutland mock-tudor home. Idyllic.

How things must have changed over the years!! A lovely little course which is in quite good condition. Club house could do with a overhaul. The green keeper is a bit on the grumpy side as well apart from that good affordable fun. Not many tanks to be seen these days!!!!!!!!

I played this course on the beautifully sunny afternoon of the 11th of November 1998. The previous couple of weeks had been very wet so the course was actually quite soft underfoot. This meant that the greens were highly receptive to approach shots and they weren't exactly off the scale when it came to the Stint meter.( Hairer than a female East German shot-putter!! ) Due to the high numbers of players and the obvious handicap of the light failing early I started my round on the 4th hole. All the fairways
are extremely forgiving and there is plenty of room for the less accurate of drives. (That must be at least 99% of us!! )
None of the holes are over endowed with hazards although there is OB on 5 of the 9 holes and a small lake on the 7th/16th. The S.S.S. is 69 and I shot 78 off of a 16 handicap and after not playing for 4 months. ( 44 points on Stableford so I won the days competition!! ) This really is, as they say from up my way ( Carnoustie ), a fine wee track!! If you can arrange to play then go for it as the views of the ex-RAF airfield are worth the effort. If anybody wants to play then drop me an E-mail and I'll help you out as I now live in the area.
