Course Details

Course Name: Southerness Holes: 18 Yardage: 6566 SSS: 73
Links course with Fairways bounded by extensive areas of gorse and heather. Wind is generally a factor and the subtle changes in direction of the holes designed by Mackenzie Ross provides a stiff test. There are no large hills or steep slopes on the course which make it easy walking. Eight of the par 4 holes are in excess of 400 yards.

A fabulous links course, a real test of golf on a calm day, but when the wind is blowing prepare for a battle! Because it is off the beaten track it is not overplayed, and the green fees are a bargain. I was fortunate enough to have my first, and only hole in one here (so far), on the 17th, so it will always live in my memory.

This is the way it's supposed to be. A fair price and a memory for life.

Teeing of at 6:15PM after flying from Orlando to Manchester and driving to Kirkbean to play Southerness and spend the night at the Cavan House was a wonderful way for 3 Floridians to begin their 10 day Scotland Golf journey.
The course is magnificent, especially the 12th hole and if you are fortunate, hopefully Stewart will be in the clubhouse to share a 'beverage' and wonderful stories about the course and the area around the Solway Firth.

As a member of Southerness I heartily recommend a visit to this testing golf course. It is in excellent condition and a new sprinkler system will ensure that there will be only a few bare lies on the fairways. As an organiser of golf holidays to the area I have yet to meet a critic of the course.
A true test especially off the whites but most will find it long enough off the yellows especially if the wind blows. Excellent greens and the fees for a course of this quality are reasonably set along with many others in Galloway. Don't miss it.

For anyone visiting this part of Scotland a round at Southerness is a must.
The greens are always in excellent condition and with the winds off the Solway you are presented with challenges to test the limits of your game. I have played this course 5 times and each time the experience has exceeded the expectations.

Having taken a group of keen golfers to Scotland over the years we always make sure that we have a game on this great course. We have enjoyed the nice warm sunny no-wind days but its not the same as a good wind to make you appreciate what a good test of golf it is. We are coming back in May '99.

It is unbelievable that there are no comments posted about this course. If there were any sort of mass accommodation nearby, this course would have held an Open Championship by now ! Peter Alliss will harp on about the signature 12th hole, but even better is the superb 3rd, 5th 10th, 13th and a brilliant par 3 17th. The course is in excellent condition, and if Tom Watson or Payne Stewart ever play there, Americans would fund a runway themselves to ensure connections. Until then, play the Royal Dornoch's, Narins, Muirfields, Prestwick's etc at a later date...do NOT miss this one !
