Having played this course over a number of years I still find it a challenge,even more so now after it's refurbishment.I regulary play it now with my work collegues uasually wednesday afternoons light permitting.The holes to look out for are the 3rd,a long par 5.The 4th,the 6th(which if you're not accurate enough you can easily land in the large pond on the left of the fairway.The 7th is a long par 4 but reachable in two.The 8th is a short blind par 3,and the 9th is one of the best looking par 4's on the course.The back 9 can be a bit tricky as it's situated only a few hundred yards from the sea front and can get pretty windy at times.12 is a long straight par 5 over a stream which is just in driving range.14 is similar.15 is also a long par 4. 16 is a medium length par 3. 17 is for long hitters into the wind,it's only 420 off the white tee but boy is it long!.18 is a very picturesque hole drivable in one if your lucky.All in all this course is one of the best municipals in the northwest a must play!.

Southport municipal or Southport Golf Links as it is now known was designed by the world reknowned golf course architect Harry Shapland Colt and is England,s oldest municipal links course (1912)it has undergone major investment by the local authority over the past 8 years and has been lengthend considerably (off the white tees) new features have been introduced, some of which are a nod and a wink to other famous links courses,such as on the long 12th with its meandering brook which you have to negotiate twice (Carnoustie) and on the 2nd with another brook right on the average driving distance with a rather familiar looking stone bridge.

Quite a good minicipal this. It is flat and well drained, and being on the coast, more often than not, blustery!! Some long straight drives required, but rough is not too bad if you do stray. greens are generally flattish. Good to pass a free afternoon.
