As a high handicapper from the U.S., I was suprised by the great reception at the Tynemouth Golf Course. The pro shop staff was friendly and very accommodating. I hired a set of decent clubs and a pull cart and was walked out to the first tee. I killed time on the large putting green before teeing off with two visitors from Kent.
The course layout was a bit confusing, be sure to save the course map on the back of the scorecard. Many holes were very long and required conservative tee shots to avoid bunkers, high rough and bunches of trees. In addition, stands of trees and shrubbery were placed in the line of sight to several holes (from off the fairway) making for many blind wedge/short iron shots.
The shorter holes were still challenging, often ringed with many trees. I found the rough especially difficult on several holes, often making swift recovery impossible. KEEP YOUR EYE ON YOUR BALL IN FLIGHT.
The greens varied from fairly flat to multi-level affairs with surrounding dips into second cut. Greens were well-maintained.
I played on a sunny but incredibly windy day and had a great time. Greens fee was 20 pounds, club rental was another 10.
