Although it s not a British Open course, Western Gailes is regarded as one of Scotland's very best and is used often as an Open qualifying site. To preserve their seaside course, members have fought a long series of architectural battles to save the course from ever-threatening tides. Western Gailes is generally accepted as being a difficult course and a great test of ones patience, perseverance, and concentration.

7 km north of Troon (A78)

Course Details

Course Name: Western Gailes Holes: 18 Yardage: 6639 SSS: 73
Despite having just two par fives and three par threes, this is as fine a links course as can be found anywhere in the British Isles. The course is placed between the railroad lines and the sea, making for narrow holes that demand exact tee shots. Especially on the long stretch from the fifth to the thirteenth, right down the coastland, the wind makes Western Gailes not only a trial of skill but something of an endurance test as well.

I just completed play at WEstern Gailes finding it in superb condition. A very well conditioned set of greens, consistient playable bunkers. The caddie, Allister, was very knowledgeable between 'two club and three club winds'. A very strong recommendation to play, the essence of true Scottish links...5 stars!

Played in May 2004. A truely outstanding links course. I disagree that you've got to be a single digit handicapper or 12 or below to enjoy the course. If you're a "good golfer" you're going to enjoy the experience. By a "good golfer" I mean not necessarily a skilled player, but someone who really understands and enjoys the game and its history and traditions. Our regular foursome currently has indexs of 7.0, 12.7, 16.5 and my 17.5, and we had a great four ball match on the course. The 90 pound or so fee included a good lunch in the clubhouse.

Even after playing Royal Troon, Western Gailes is a great experience!
Western Gailes is a far more interesting course than many of its more wellknown neighbors. If you go there, ask for Bill as a caddy, he knows the course outside in and give you exact distances (he never says an even number like 60 yards or so, it is always 123 y or 89 yards!)
