I was the bartender at the 19th hole from 1975 through 1977. I fondly remember all the people mentioned in the previous posts as well as many more. Well hello Craig.
I just ran into this site after reading about Johnnys obit. A flood of memories came rushing back as I remember all the great times we had in Berlin.
Playing golf with you and Don was a time I'll never forget. Paid you guys every time we played, but well wort it? I too have a few photo of the time at BG&CC.. I closed down Facebook a few years ago.. Got so caught up in th political s*** .
Was not healthy.
Hope all is well with you and the family.
I'm now playing about 3-4 times a month, no more slices or rad fades... Hit it pretty straight these days.
All is good in Utah!

Craig, I was skimming around the net and ran across the death of Johnny Mitchell after all of these years. Johnny was the first golfer I've known who played 18 holes with only a 5 Iron and came off with a respectable score. Johnny. Mark White (AFN) and I played quite a few games together and I was disappointed to read about his passing, Quite a troop. I also read your offer to send me photos of Johnny IF you can. We were stationed in Berlin from 68-71. I was 13 -15 1/2. I caddied for my dad there as well as played with friends from the Short family. I believe they ran the driving range, or maybe just worked there. Somewhere on the back side it ran adjacent to another golf course. Kinda odd how it was #10 that returned to the clubhouse..so the turn was at #10. One memory is of my dad throwing a club high into a tree after a bad shot. The club didn't come down. I think it was #13 or 14. Later that winter I went back and knocked it down from that tree. I could see it because the leaves had a fallen off.Something I never will forget. I loved that golf course, and was thrilled to see it for the first time since all those years ago via google earth a few years back.

I was researching some old names I remember at the BG&CC and found this ol guy that was always fun to talk to and be around. I don't remember how good of a golfer he was but he was a good man. RIP Hoss.

My dad was (as far as I know) one of the original pros at the Berlin Golf and Country Club when U.S. and Allied forces took possession in 1945. He's described filling in all the craters from bombings, removal of at least one undetonated bomb, and supervising/working with the Germans who worked on the crews to rehabilitate the course. He joined the U.S. Army in May of 1945, just out of high school (a golf standout at Jefferson H.S in San Antonio)and assumed his duties soon after completing his basic training, arriving in Dresden aboard a troop transport vessel. He apparently first arrived in Germany within weeks after VE day, and stayed working at the Club until his honorable discharge at the end of 1946. He states that he never won (came in second or third) at the Allied Command's tournament there in 1946, but did win as the club's representative to the Allies "Paris Open" in 1946. When he returned to San Antonio, he met my mom, got married and had 3 kids and could not afford to be a pro. After 30 years selling real estate to support a family (but still a great amateur golfer and supporter of junior golf, he got the opportunity to become head pro at Turtle Creek CC in San Antonio in 1976, later working at Woodlake CC and Northcliffe CC until he retired in 1990.

Hey guy's, Bill Leonard here. I was the young shop rat that seemd to be there all the time from 73-75. Lot of good times my last year, played on the high scholl golf team with all the Jr's and Sr's me as a Frosh. Had a chance to go back seven years ago, what a change. Where are all of you living these years? I've settled in NC just west of Winston Salem, love it out here! Keep in touch.

I had the pleasure to work with Edmund Reitz, Heinz, Tom Fuller, Steve West, Al (from Baltimore), Thom Deleuw, Skip Butler, Jim English, Tony Virgilio, and Johnny Mitchell. What an unbelievable opportunity and a superb group of people to share it with.

I also worked there with Jeff Kramer. Does anyone else remember Bubby Schultz the pro boxer or Klaus Behnke. Horst Deiter the German policeman that guarded the course at night.What great people. I was 19 and growing up in Berlin Germany with a bunch of great people at a phenominal time. The Wall. The memories this is bringing back!!! Skip taught me to ride and work on dirt bikes out on the course. How about Petite Chalea'. Skip, I know yoiu remember. The times. The stories. What I wouldn't give to be able to go back. The best of times by far.

I worked at The Club with CW4 Virgilio then Johnny Mitchell, Skip Butler, Jeff Worsham, Edmond and Heinze and you can't forget Jim English. My son asks today when were the best times I ever had. I tell him besides since he was born, it was by far Berlin at the golf course. He goes in the Army 7/23/12 and we're hoping he gets stationed in Germany. He WILL go to the course and see his dad's name on a few of those plaques. I loved my life there and the great times with the great people. One of the guys not mentioned during the early/mid 70's was Dr Bill Newton - what a great golfer he was - I think he won every tournament he entered. Hope all is well with you. I am still hacking it around and contact Steve Hockenberry once in a while. Hollis Howze evidently is having a tough time with cancer according to some internet articles I'v seen. I am one of the secretaries in the German Golf Club "Golf- und Land-Club Berlin-Wannsee" and had to smile when I read the comments of those who used to frequent the Berlin Golf Club. Unfortunately, Heinz Ebel died a few years ago. No, he didn't die standing in front of the Caddy Haus with a bottle in his hand! Smile. "His" house is still called "Heinz' House". Jim English just visited us before Christmas. A few retired members of the former American club were elated and everyone was very emotional. I was stationed in Berlin in 1955-1956 and played on the military golf team on the course. I remember the 10th hole went downhill with trees to the right and a Russian guard tower was down a path to the right on the way to the 11th tee. Also played in a tournament on the 9-hole German course next door. With my partner, Jim (?) Brown, we won the tournament. Location was last stop on subway, before East Germany.

I was stationed at the Berlin Golf and Contry Club for almost 3 years in the early 70s. I was one of the assistant managers of the golf pro-shop with Johnney Mitchel,Edmund Reits, Mr English, Jeff Worsham, Thom Delue,and Hienz the caddy master. I will never forget the experence living in such a pristine area of Berlin and being able to golf whenever there was time. I will always remember all of the German nationals I had the honor to meet and all of the military personel and dependents I worked for. I was also a track coach at Berlin American High School this was a great time in my life. Thank you Berlin

I was at the golf course from April 73 to Sept 74 and worked with Edmund, Johnny, Jim and Jeff along with others. Went back with the veteran group in 98 and saw the new facilities and Hientz and ran into Clause Benkie (sp).

Skip-read your comments and was wondering if you had any info on the staff. I was there in 1968 and was the golf pro at that time and won the all service championship which was held at the Berlin CC that year. What a great place to be for a year.

I was in the Air Force assigned for 14 months to work for the US Army in the pro shop. Eddie Reitz, Heinz, both no doubt long dead by now, head pro Johnny Mitchell, and the often present General Cobb. I posted some photos (1973) at the course on Denis Walp's Facebook page.

my sister and I attended the Berlin American school in the 1960's- at that time it was TA Roberts (Thomas A..)school. She keeps in touch with the 'Berlin Brats' from that time. so glad you appreciate Berlin-imagine it during the cold war! Bridge games with Gen. Hartel & Watson's wives- mother loved it!

I was transferred from my MOS 11 Bravo to recreation specialist and was transferred to the golf course. I remember Edmond Rietz,Heinz, Jim English, Linda. I had a great time when I was there. I played the Berlin, Germany course many times as a junior golfer while living in West Berlin in the early 70's.
I have many fond memories of playing this beautiful venue with my best friends and father - come rain or shine.
It is so good to know that this course still remains today - some 30 years later.
Just can't wait to get back out there.

Loved the course. I was there 70-74 with the old Field Station. We always had 2 groups with tee times Saturdays and Sundays around 7:10 each day.
I was visited Berlin last year for business but did not go to the course. I would love to play it again.

You may have known my dad, Ted Green, from FSB and the golf club (I'm assuming he spent about equal time both places). He loved that place, and especially enjoyed winning the Old Granddad's Tournament several times (youngest grandfather, due to my half-sister's kids), and the Old Crow tournament. He's in assisted living in the Northern Neck of VA now...saw him in June. Those days were his happiest, both professionally and in our family life.
