Carnoustie championship course - Scotland

The Championship Course at Carnoustie has hosted some legendary British Open champions - Ben Hogan, Gary Player, Tom Watson - and one epic British Open choke. This is where Jean Van de Velde rolled up a triple-bogey seven on the 72nd hole in 1999, setting up a three-way playoff which he lost to Paul Lawrie.

Play it and you might have a little more sympathy for the Frenchman. Mostly flat and protected from the sea by dunes, Carnoustie isn't the most scenic course, but its incredible James Braid bunkering and large, firm greens are things of beauty in themselves. Stockpile your pars on the front side; the back nine is a killer, especially the final five holes.
